INTRODUCTION:

We have many auxiliary verbs in English and this study aims at pointing out some of them. When one manages to deal with these verbs he/she will be able to understand a greater amount of texts.

I) SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
a) DO;
b) DOES.

A) "DO" is used for the following personal pronouns: I, you, we, and they in the negative and interrogative form.

B) "DOES" is used for the third person singular, i.e., he, she, it.
Examples:

1) I don't have money. (Eu não tenho dinheiro)
2) I do not have money. (Eu não tenho dinheiro)
3) Kate doesn't like milk, she prefers to drink coffee. (Kate não gosta de leite, ela prefere beber café)
4) The computer does not need power. (O computador não precissa de poder)
5) It doesn't need power. (Ele não precisa de força)
6) Do you like hot beer? (Você gosta de cerveja quente?0
7) Does Sheila eat meat every day? (Sheila come carne todos os dias?)
8) Do you come to school every night? (Você vem à escola todas as noites?)

II) SIMPLE PAST TENSE.

In the Simple Past Tense we have the auxiliary verb DID ("DID" is the Simple Past Tense of "TO DO"). This form, "DID" is used for all persons in the
negative and interrogative form.

Examples:

1) We didn't have plenty of time, so we had a snack. (Nós não tínhamos muito tempo, portanto fizemos um lanche.)
2) Did you come here yesterday? (Você veio aqui ontem?)
3) She did not like the present I gave her on her birthday. (Ela não gostou do presente que eu dei a ela no seu aniversário)
4) Did she need to work? (Ela precisava trabalhar?)
III) SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE

In order to make a sentence in the Simple Future Tense, we have only to place the word "WILL" before the first verb of the sentence. In the negative form,we put "NOT" in front of the auxiliary verb, and in the interrogative form "WILL" comes before the subject of the sentence.

Examples:
1) I will be a doctor. (Eu serei um doutor)
2) The world will be as one. (O mundo será como um)
3) She will not stay with us tonight. (Ela não ficará conosco esta noite)
4) He won't listen to my words, he doesn't like me. (Ele não ouvirá minhas palavras, ele não gosta de mim)
5) Will you be there? (Você estará lá?)
6) Will you have a future? (Vocês/Você terão/terá um futuro?)

IV) CONDITIONAL TENSE

To make a sentence in the Conditional Tense we put the word WOULD before the first verb of the sentence. In the negative form the word NOT is put after the auxiliary, and in the interrogative form WOULD comes before the subject of the sentence.

Examples:

1) I would be nothing without my Lord. (Eu seria nada sem meu Senhor)
2) I would like to be your best friend. (Eu gostaria de ser seu melhor amigo)
3) I wouldn't live without your love. (Eu não viveria sem seu amor)
4) I would not come if I knew her evil plans. (Eu não viria se eu soubesse os planos ruins dela)
5) Would you like to have a cup of tea? (Você gostaria de tomar uma xícara de chá?)
6) Would David study English? (David estudaria inglês?)
